Hot Rail Summer continued all month with tours, completed structures, presentations and a wave of new scholarships! Take a look at this month’s I Will Ride update to read all about it.
Bay Area Students Visit High-Speed Rail Construction
San Jose and Bay Area students recently had an opportunity of a lifetime to tour future high-speed rail stations and structures in California’s Central Valley. Joining the tour were students and staff in the Mineta Transportation Institute’s Summer Transportation Institute, an annual summer program that provides students with tours, site visits, classroom lectures and interactive activities to learn more about public transit in Northern California and statewide. Students in the program are transit enthusiasts and were eager to step foot on structures that will carry future high-speed rail trains. Students had a full day for their site visit. They started with a bus tour that included a California high-speed rail update and a discussion from an expert on global HSR systems. When they arrived to the Valley, they went to various construction locations and even experienced an engineering panel discussion during lunch. Students had many questions about the future of high-speed rail and college pathways and majors.
Los Angeles Students Welcome Regional Director for High-Speed Rail Overview
After three years of virtual presentations with LA Metro’s Transportation Career Academy Program (TCAP), we were excited to join them in-person to provide a California high-speed rail overview! The Southern California Regional Director provided a statewide and SoCal project overview, detailing the complex project sections in SoCal and the progress in the region. Students also learned about the I Will Ride student outreach program, how to get involved and pathways to 21st century high-speed rail jobs. TCAP is managed by LA Metro and provides students internship opportunities in various Metro departments while also providing opportunities to learn about statewide transportation projects that impact SoCal. Students in the program must reside in the region and have a general interest in learning about careers in transportation.
Central Valley Training Center New Wave of Graduates
Earlier this month the Authority celebrated the newest graduation cohort of the Central Valley Training Center. Students in this 12-week program are introduced to various construction trades and receive training certificates to help them begin their apprenticeship careers in construction.

Completed structures in Central Valley Continue
These summer months have shown tremendous construction progress in the Central Valley. This year the Authority announced the completion of McCombs Road overcrossing, Elkhorn Avenue overcrossing, Cedar Viaduct, Dover Avenue and Idaho Avenue structures. ICYMI: Video of Capital Fellows Touring HSR Construction
Last month we shared an exciting tour with the Governor’s Office Capital Fellows. Fellows, who are placed at various offices in the Executive Branch, talked about some of the key policy issues that California HSR touches on. In addition, they noted how California high-speed rail can improve economic outcomes in the Central Valley and throughout the state.
Latinos in Transit Scholarship
Latinos In Transit (LIT) is continuing its scholarship program to support Latinos and other minorities in their pursuit of educational advancement. The purpose of this scholarship is to create opportunities for underserved and/or underrepresented individuals pursuing degrees and/or certifications from accredited educational institutions in a public transit-related field of study such as, but not limited to, business administration or management, marketing, finance, project management, urban or transportation planning, engineering, etc.

WTS Sacramento Scholarships
WTS is committed to the advancement of women in the transportation industry, and one of the many effective ways they actively enable this advancement is through their scholarship program. Since 2005, the Sacramento Chapter has awarded over $125,000 in scholarships to 100 young women pursuing careers supporting the transportation industry through the generous donations of supporters and members.

California Transportation Foundation Scholarships
The California Transportation Foundation’s (CTF) mission is to educate the future of the transportation profession through scholarships, educational programs, mentoring and internships. WTS Orange County Scholarships
To encourage women pursuing careers in transportation, Women’s Transportation Seminar – Orange County (WTS-OC) will be offering high school, community college, undergraduate and graduate scholarships to women throughout Southern California. In 2022, WTS-OC awarded 11 scholarships for a total of $50,000.
Applications are due no later than 5pm PST on Friday, Aug.4, 2023, and may be submitted online or sent as a single PDF document to wtsocscholarship@gmail.com.
Youth Outreach Coordinator, AGC of California (Northern California)
The Youth Outreach Coordinator will play a key role in the execution of the Construction Education Foundations’ comprehensive strategy and initiatives for Build California. The Youth Outreach Coordinator is responsible for supporting the operational and administrative components of the Build California program for K through12. The Youth Outreach Coordinator will provide support including the development, coordination and delivery of resources, events and marketing related to the Build California program for K through12.
